The Stanley Hotel — King's Overlook RoadyGoat

1909

The Stanley Hotel at 333 East Wonderview Avenue opened on July 4, 1909, built by Freelan Oscar Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame. In late September 1974, Stephen King and his wife checked in just as the hotel was closing for the season; nearly empty, room 217, an off-season hush — and King left with the seed of 'The Shining' and its haunted Overlook Hotel. Here's the common mix-up: Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film did NOT shoot here. Kubrick used Oregon's Timberline Lodge for the exterior and British soundstages for the rest. The Stanley got its on-screen turn in King's own 1997 TV miniseries, filmed on location to match his vision. It's on the National Register of Historic Places and leans hard into its spooky fame today.
