History of Williamsburg

Corbin, KY RoadyGoat

Corbin, Kentucky, sits up in the foothills, and while healthcare and retail drive most of the local economy today, the town's claim to fame is undeniably fried chicken. It was here, at his cafe in North Corbin, that Harland Sanders perfected the now-famous recipe. The exact blend stays a guarded secret, but the impact is clear: Corbin is the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken, and the old cafe is a museum now, still drawing visitors after a piece of culinary history. But Corbin's past holds something much harder than that. On the night of October 30, 1919, a white mob rounded up nearly all of Corbin's roughly two hundred Black residents, marched them to the depot, and forced them onto a freight train out of town. It was an expulsion, not a two-sided riot, and it worked — Corbin ran as a sundown town, a place Black people were not safe after dark, for most of the century that followed. In October 2019, a hundred years to the month, city leaders issued a proclamation formally acknowledging the riot and the sundown policy. That reckoning belongs in Corbin's story just as much as the chicken does.

Corbin, KY RoadyGoat

Corbin, Kentucky, nestled in the foothills at a comfortable 1,083 feet above sea level, owes its name to Reverend James Corbin. Incorporated in 1905, the town took his name as its own, a common practice in the era, reflecting the respect held for community leaders and clergymen. While the name itself doesn't directly translate to a specific meaning, its significance lies in the legacy of the man it honors. It speaks to a foundational era where individuals dedicated to service and faith were cornerstones of burgeoning communities. The town's history is a mix of triumphs and scars. The Great Fire of 1919 ravaged downtown, demanding resilience and rebuilding. The stain of a 1920s race riot, which cruelly displaced Black residents, remains a dark chapter. Yet, Corbin is also known for its neighborly warmth, a small-town charm that permeates its atmosphere.
