History of Booneville

Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site RoadyGoat

1864

Here, a smaller Confederate force under Nathan Bedford Forrest decisively defeated a larger Union army, showcasing brilliant tactics. On 1864, Forrest's men clashed with Union troops at Brice's Cross Roads. Despite being outnumbered, Forrest exploited the terrain and launched a series of aggressive attacks. The Union forces, under General Sturgis, suffered a crushing defeat. This victory boosted Confederate morale in the region. While it didn't change the overall course of the Civil War, Forrest's diversion into Mississippi actually kept Sherman's supply lines intact — Union General Sturgis had drawn Forrest away from the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad, and it never fell. Today, you can visit the Brice's Cross Roads National Battlefield Site. It's a small park with a monument and cannons, a reminder of the intense battle that unfolded here.
