History of Carthage

Diamond, Missouri's Real Jewel RoadyGoat

A town called Diamond out on the Missouri prairie sounds like a gem story, somebody finding sparkle in the dirt. But the diamond here was never a stone. Early settlers looked out across the flat grassland and saw a stand of trees growing in a distinct diamond shape, a four-sided grove against the open prairie. They called it Diamond Grove, and the town that grew up nearby borrowed the name, eventually trimmed to just Diamond. The real treasure here turned out to be a person. This is the birthplace of George Washington Carver, the scientist who transformed Southern agriculture from a small farm just outside town. The grove gave the name. The boy gave the place its fame.

Miracle survivals and far-flung debris RoadyGoat

1915

On May 22, 2011, an EF5 tornado tore through Joplin, Missouri, with winds over 200 mph. It killed 158 people and injured more than 1,150. But here is what storm country never forgets: the day after, seventeen people were pulled alive from collapsed homes. And the wind scattered Joplin's paper world for miles. Medical records from the destroyed St. John's hospital turned up in Greene and Polk counties, well to the east, and folks far away mailed home photographs they found in their yards. The longest documented debris journey is older still. After the Great Bend, Kansas tornado of November 10, 1915, a canceled check was found in a cornfield near Palmyra, Nebraska, about 305 miles away. A four-page love letter rode 70 miles. So when the wind cleans out, check the fence line. You might be holding someone's whole life.
