History of Anaconda

Anaconda Has No Snakes RoadyGoat

Anaconda, Montana, sounds like it was named for a giant snake, or maybe some heavy metal hauled out of the mountains. The truth is more industrial than either. The town was built around a copper smelter, and it took its name from Marcus Daly's Anaconda copper mine and the company behind it. The mine itself had picked up a snake-themed nickname earlier, and the name rolled downhill from mine to company to town. What grew here was a smelter city, and its enormous brick smokestack stands among the tallest masonry structures ever built. So the anaconda you're looking for is copper, dressed up in a serpent's name.

Anaconda Smelter Stack: Monument to the Copper Kings

1884

The 585-foot Anaconda Smelter Stack, taller than the Washington Monument, is all that remains of the massive copper smelting complex that processed ore from Butte for nearly a century.

Granite Ghost Town: Silver's Rise and Fall

1882

The Granite Mine became the richest silver mine on Earth after a last-blast discovery, yielding $40 million before the 1893 silver crash emptied the town virtually overnight.
