History of Goldsboro

Goldsboro's Gold That Wasn't RoadyGoat

Goldsboro. The name has gold sitting right there in front of you, so naturally you assume there was a strike here, a rush, a vein of the yellow stuff in eastern North Carolina. There wasn't. Not an ounce. The town owes its name to a man, not a metal. A railroad engineer named Matthew T. Goldsborough laid out the line through this area, and the spot where the tracks met became known as Goldsborough's Junction. Over the years people did what people always do with a long name. They wore it down, smoothed off the rough edges, and Goldsborough's Junction became plain Goldsboro. So the gold in Goldsboro is really a surname, carried in on the railroad.
