History of New London

Badin Isn't a Material. It's a Frenchman. RoadyGoat

1913

Badin, North Carolina, sits where a giant aluminum smelter once hummed, so the name almost sounds like some kind of alloy or material. It isn't. The town was laid out in nineteen thirteen by a French company building a dam and plant on the Yadkin River, and they named it for Adrien Badin, a French engineer and president of their aluminum venture. World War One derailed the French effort, and the works were sold to the Aluminum Company of America. Here's the bittersweet part: Adrien Badin died in nineteen seventeen, never having laid eyes on the American town that carries his name. So the smelter town isn't named for a substance at all. It's named for a man who never saw it.
