History of Birmingham

Sandusky: It Means Cold Water RoadyGoat

Say Sandusky out loud and you hear it: sand. You'd guess the name has something to do with sandy shores or mineral beaches along Lake Erie. But the sand is a coincidence of sound. The name comes from a Wyandot word, and it has nothing to do with sand. It means, roughly, cold water, or water within the water-pools. It described the clear, cold water of the bay and the springs of the region. English speakers heard the native word and reshaped it into Sandusky, and the accidental sand stuck to the front of it. So a lakeside town whose name seems to promise sandy beaches is really named, in another language entirely, for cold, clean water.
