History of Custer City

The Cap: Storm Country as a Pressure Cooker RoadyGoat

1950

On the most dangerous spring days out here, the sky can look deceptively calm right up until it explodes. The reason is something forecasters call the cap: a layer of warm, dry air riding along aloft, drifting out over the plains from the high deserts of Mexico and the Southwest. It acts like a lid on a pressure cooker, trapping all the warm, moist Gulf air underneath and letting its energy build and build through the afternoon without a single cloud forming. Then the dryline and the day's heat punch a hole in that lid. When the trapped air finally breaks through, it does not drizzle, it erupts, towering up in minutes into the kind of rotating supercell that drops giant hail and tornadoes. All that eerie calm was just the storm loading its spring.
