History of Newport

The Boy Who Ran Away for Three Years RoadyGoat

1798

Davy Crockett grew up around here, where his father John ran a tavern on the wagon road. It was not an easy boyhood. At twelve, his father hired him out to a cattle drover bound for Virginia, more than two hundred miles away, and when the man tried to keep him on, the boy slipped away in the night and walked home. Sent off to school soon after, David got into a fight with a bully, played hooky to avoid the teacher, and then ran off rather than face his father's hickory stick. He was gone the better part of three years, working as a hired hand and wagoner, and came back so grown that his own family did not recognize him at first. He had almost no formal schooling and taught himself to read and write as a young man. In 1806 he married Polly Finley and started a family of his own. A reconstructed Crockett Tavern stands here as a museum today. (Sources: Crockett Tavern Museum; Crockett's own 1834 autobiography.)
