History of Harrisonburg

Port Republic Historic District (Port Republic, Virginia) RoadyGoat

1861

Hold on tight; you're about to enter a place where the fate of the Shenandoah Valley hung in the balance! This is Port Republic, where a pivotal Civil War battle unfolded. On 1862, Confederate General Stonewall Jackson fought a crucial battle here against Union forces. The Battle of Port Republic was the last major engagement of Jackson's Valley Campaign. The Confederates, with roughly 6,000 troops against roughly 3,500 Union soldiers under Brigadier General E.B. Tyler, held numerical superiority and secured a hard-won victory. This victory ensured Confederate control of the Shenandoah Valley for a while longer, preventing Union forces from reinforcing their positions near Richmond. It solidified Jackson's reputation as a brilliant military strategist. Today, the Port Republic Historic District preserves the character of this important town. While many buildings are replacements for those lost to floods, they reflect the late 19th and early 20th-century rebuilding efforts. Take a walk around, and you can almost hear the echoes of history in this valley.
