History of Warrenton

Auburn Battlefield RoadyGoat

1861

Stand on the ground where Union and Confederate forces clashed in a bloody prelude to the Battle of Bristoe Station. On October 13th and 14th, 1863, two separate engagements, known as the First and Second Battles of Auburn, unfolded here. Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry was caught off guard by advancing Union troops. The fighting was intense but relatively brief. The Confederates, though initially surprised, managed to hold their ground and delay the Union advance. Ultimately, the Auburn battles resulted in a tactical stalemate. While not decisive victories for either side, the battles at Auburn had strategic consequences. The Confederate delay disrupted Union plans and contributed to the shifting movements leading up to the larger Battle of Bristoe Station. It bought time for Lee's army. Today, the Auburn Battlefield is a National Historic District. While the landscape has changed over time, walking the grounds allows you to imagine the events that unfolded here. Look for markers and interpretive signs that help tell the story of this significant Civil War site.
