History of Baraboo

Columbia Correctional Institution RoadyGoat

1992

Columbia Correctional, a maximum-security prison an hour north of Madison, is where Jeffrey Dahmer served his 957-year sentence, and where that sentence ended early. On the morning of November 28, 1994, he was killed by fellow inmate Christopher Scarver during a work detail in the prison gymnasium. He had been incarcerated here for two years. The facility still operates today, a low sprawl of concrete and fence line outside the town of Portage, housing roughly eight hundred men who are, for their own reasons, not going home.
