History of Wilmington

Brunswick Town Historic District RoadyGoat

1726

Imagine a bustling colonial port town, reduced to ruins, then reborn as a Confederate fort. That's Brunswick Town. Established in 1726, Brunswick Town quickly became a major commercial center, challenging nearby Wilmington. During the leadup to the Revolutionary War, it became a flashpoint for colonial defiance — in 1765, armed citizens blocked the Stamp Act stamps from being unloaded and forced British officials to resign, one of the earliest organized acts of armed resistance in America. Then, in 1776, the British completely destroyed Brunswick Town, and it was never rebuilt. Its destruction significantly weakened British control in the region, contributing to the eventual American victory. The focus of commerce shifted more firmly to Wilmington. Today, you can walk among the ruins of homes, businesses, and St. Philips Church. Later, during the Civil War, the area was fortified as Fort Anderson, and those earthworks are still visible, too. It's a powerful place to connect with North Carolina's complex past.
